The Burma Medical Association, under the guidance of the first national health conference, was formed on 8th June 1991 at Marnerplaw liberated area in Karen State of Burma, with medical doctors, medics, nurses, midwives and community health workers who work on the borders, in order to elevate a necessary level of health care on the borders and initiate for the promulgation of a public health policy and multi-sectoral collaboration and cooperation. For the past 27 years, BMA has been the leading body for health policy development and capacity building for the provision of quality health care services in ethnic areas of Burma. BMA works closely with the local ethnic health organization, civil society groups and local, national and international health organizations.
